The transformation of the estate
Transitioning the crops on our estate to organic cultivation means adopting a prevention rather than cure attitude, anticipating problems and not using far-reaching products.
We are tackling the problem by using biological products in order to balance biodiversity, we use predators that eat plagues to create a natural reserve so we will gradually need to use less products.
The need to find a balance is paramount, as is the need to create natural products that are environmentally sustainable, especially in a region like ours with low humidity that could really benefit from organic cultivation, it’s a common-sense philosophy.
VINEYARDS
It’s a huge responsibility for us to maintain the family winemaking legacy – a legacy started by our grandfather – and we also have a commitment to maintain the old vineyards in the rest of our region because they give us our identity, character and differentiation.
It’s fundamental that we are able to connect with the land and the grape-growers in the region – elders who know how to interpret the vines in any given moment. We need to learn from them and take up the mantle of knowledge.
Wine begins in the vineyard, and we need to be able to identify the soils, sunlight hours, etc. that facilitate the life of the vines – we need to find the exact spot that will give them their best chance. The poor calcareous soils enable the Monastrell variety to develop incredible fruit to make fine, elegant, quality wines.
We are working hard for our indigenous grape variety, but we also cultivate other varieties whose growth cycle has adapted well to our soils and climate, varieties such as Garnacha Fina and traditional white varieties such as Malvasía.
OLIVES
Olives and almonds are both traditional crops from the region and our estate, but we are also looking for new soils, implementing new cultivation systems and new varieties that adapt well to the climate.
The ‘Trinity’ of the high-plains of Murcia – olives, almonds and vines – are nutritious products we have always had at home, almonds and olive oil are basic ingredients in the Mediterranean diet.
We are transitioning our olive groves to organic cultivation while making sure we get maximum quality from the crop. We take great care in nurturing our olive trees and are particularly careful at harvest time to carry out the process quickly to avoid storing the olives. The recently harvested olives are taken immediately to the mill in order to preserve their organoleptic properties to the full, giving rise to expressive, aromatic extra virgin olive oil.
ALMONDS
Almonds are one of the traditional crops grown on our estate, there are some trees as old as the vines planted by our grandfather which are still productive. It is a well-established crop of ancestral varieties that have always given good results. This crop has adapted well to the climate and is able to survive the spring frosts.
Although we have developed our crops over time by planting new varieties that have been sold on the market, by maintaining traditional varieties we can guarantee production. The varieties are: Guara, Atocha, Lauranne, Ferraduel and Ferragnes, the latter contains the highest oil content in the world and is full of flavour.
