OUR STORY

Located in the northeast of Murcia, in the region of Jumilla, the original bodega was founded by Grandpa Francisco Pacheco in 1948. Francisco began by making wine in a modest homebased wine press that was later inherited by Paco Pacheco, father to the Pacheco sisters. Paco subsequently expanded the enterprise that is currently in the hands of the third and fourth generations of the Pacheco Family. This young team continue to run their wine business with the passion of their forebears, combining tradition with innovation to highlight the knowledge they have gained from their ancestors while contributing their own pioneering, contemporary knowledge about the winemaking process.

Bodega 0

Francisco Pacheco bought the family home, which already had the wine press, at the beginning of the 1940s and started to make wine. Now, more than 80 years later, we have renovated the space to make it part of our wine tourism experience.

Bodega 1 - Viña Elena

Bodega 1

The bodega was built in 1948 to make and age wine. It was built to house concrete vats and large wooden casks. Today, the building is used for bulk wine sales.

Bodega 2 - Viña Elena

Bodega 2

Some 30 years later, in 1978, Paco Pacheco built this warehouse with its large subterranean vats. We currently use it to bottle our finished products.

Bodega 3 - Viña Elena

Bodega 3

In 2005, with Elena Pacheco managing the business, the newest bodega was built. This magnificent building is where we make and age our wine using the latest technology. It also houses our offices and retail shop.

LA CASA DE LOS ABUELOS

The ancestral family home

Although the bodega has evolved as regards technology, it has never lost its strong ties to the family legacy and tradition.
Luckily, the new generations have been able to rely on a solid winery infrastructure from the very beginning.
We have renovated bodega 0, together with the family home, to become a culinary space for our visitors – La Casa de los Abuelos.
Our visitors can participate in our story and the extraordinary generational evolution that has made us who we are.

Following tradition, while looking to the future

This heading represents our whole philosophy: constantly moving towards the future, always innovating, while valuing the family legacy, tradition, and hereditary know-how.
The third generation: Elena and Emi. The two Pacheco sisters are currently at the helm of the family bodega and are proud of the fact that the fourth generation are now finding their way in the business. With the enthusiasm of youth, the new generation of the Pacheco family are putting all their passion and hard work behind this grand project.
The fourth generation: Fernando, María and Elena are in charge of exports, wine tourism and purchasing, respectively, and form part of the Pacheco Family that runs a bodega that is always looking to the future.

Our oenologist: Pilar Abellán

Pilar Abellán Enóloga

Pilar began her career in 1987 when she finished her studies in the Madrid College of Oenology and Viticulture.
She began as a wine sales representative in the region of Madrid for a bodega in Villena, Alicante where, in 1991, she was promoted to assistant oenologist. She later spent three years making wine for the Bodegas y Bebidas Group in Jumilla, and another seven in Bodega Cooperativa de Pinoso before joining our family. Pilar will soon be celebrating 20 years at Bodegas Viña Elena.
And true to her name, we regard her as our fundamental pillar. Hard-working, committed and generous to a fault, Pilar is passionate about everything she does. She possesses the unique virtue of being omnipresent. During the harvest, one minute she might be sampling grapes from the vines or hauling water hoses and the next she might be testing the ph and the malic acid in the grapes in the lab. She doesn’t like to be the centre of attention (we have had to ‘steal’ every photo we have of her) but she is behind every single one of our wines.

OUR OTHER FAMILY

The individuals who form part of the team at Viña Elena are the very heart and soul of the business thanks to their willingness to do things the right way. We feel proud to work alongside some of the individuals who began their adventure at the bodega with the first generation and are still here today. Their wisdom and talent, together with the vitality and chutzpah of youth, have made the business a project for the future for everyone.
